ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) is the first-line treatment for diarrhea-related dehydration in children. It is a life-saving mixture of salt, sugar, and water.
When to Give ORS
Give ORS when your child has:
• Watery diarrhea (2 or more episodes)
• Vomiting
• Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, fewer wet diapers, no tears)
ORS Dose for Children by Weight
| Child Weight | ORS per day |
|---|---|
| 5 kg | 250–500 ml |
| 10 kg | 500–1000 ml |
| 15 kg | 750–1500 ml |
| 20 kg | 1000–2000 ml |
How to Prepare ORS
1. Wash your hands thoroughly
2. Dissolve one ORS sachet in 1 litre of **clean drinking water**
3. **Do not boil** after mixing
4. **Use within 24 hours** (store in refrigerator)
How to Give ORS
• Give **frequent small amounts** — not all at once
• Use a spoon or syringe for infants
• Continue breastfeeding if breastfed
• If child vomits, wait 10 minutes and try again slowly
Homemade ORS Recipe
If ORS sachets are unavailable:
• 1 litre clean water
• 6 level teaspoons of sugar
• Half level teaspoon of salt
• Mix until dissolved
When to See a Doctor
• Blood in stool
• No improvement after 2 days of ORS
• Child refuses to drink
• Signs of severe dehydration
• Fever above 39°C
ORS is not a cure for diarrhea — it replaces lost fluids and salts. The underlying cause (infection) needs separate treatment.
