Amoxicillin is the most commonly prescribed antibiotic for children in India. It treats bacterial infections of the ear, throat, chest, and urinary tract.
Correct Amoxicillin Dose for Children
• **20–40 mg per kg per day** (split into 3 doses every 8 hours)
• **Maximum: 90 mg per kg per day** in severe infections
• **Maximum single dose: 1000 mg**
Example for a 10 kg Child:
• Daily range: 200–400 mg
• Per dose (every 8 hours): 67–133 mg
• Syrup (250mg/5ml): 1.5–2.5 ml per dose
Always Complete the Course
Even if your child feels better, **complete the full prescribed course** (usually 5–7 days). Stopping early can lead to antibiotic resistance.
Common Side Effects
• Diarrhea (common — give probiotics)
• Skin rash (may be allergic or benign)
• Nausea and vomiting
Allergic Reactions
If your child develops:
• Hives or skin rash with itching
• Swelling of face or lips
• Difficulty breathing
**Seek emergency medical help immediately** — this could be anaphylaxis.
Important Precautions
1. **Tell the doctor** if child has penicillin allergy
2. **Give with or without food** (food doesn't affect absorption)
3. **Shake syrup well** before use
4. **Store in refrigerator** if reconstituted suspension
